Program Information

The Virginia Horticultural Foundation Grant Program was established to provide financial support for horticulture programs and projects in Virginia. The Foundation’s mission is to award grants for horticulture programs and projects that have a positive impact on the community.  

Projects and Programs Funded

  • Projects or programs that enhance the organization’s ability to meet the needs of those it serves
  • Projects or programs that provide educational benefits to the community
  • Projects or programs that are beneficial to the organization’s mission
  • Projects or programs that promote sound horticulture practices

Grant Requirements

  • Gifts are only given to organizations
  • Organizations must operate for charitable or educational purposes
  • Organizations must qualify as an exempted organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code


Grants are not available for:

  • Organizations not tax-exempted under 501(c)(3)
  • Organizations that do not provide benefits or services in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Individuals
  • Fundraising events
  • Operational support
  • Political, fraternal or religious activities
  • Endowments
  • Existing financial obligations

Grant Submissions

  • All grant proposals must be submitted by   March 31st
  • Decisions will be made in June
  • All organizations must submit original documents plus one copy (to include the grant cover sheet, application and attachments)

Grant Submission Requirements

  • Copy of 501(c)(3) IRS authorization letter
  • List of names and address for Board of Directors
  • A copy of your most current audited financial statements or last year’s budget and financial statement
  • A specific line budget for the funds being requested
  • Description of your Organization (history, mission, activities)
  • A description of the program or project
  • A description of the program or project need
  • A statement of why your organization selected this project or program
  • A statement of the expected outcome
  • A statement of how this program or project supports the organization’s mission
  • Time frame for the project or program
  • A statement of who will benefit from this project or program
  • A statement of  the impact on the community
  • A statement of the amount requested
  • A description of the use of the grant money
  • A description of how the program or project will be supported after the grant period ends
  • A budget summary
  • A list of other financial assistance sources

Proposal Review

The Virginia Horticultural Foundation will review all proposals and notify all organizations of their grant status.

Grant Reporting Requirements

The Virginia Horticultural Foundation requires that all organizations receiving grants must submit a final report (single page) describing the outcomes of the program or project, a financial report outlining how the money was spent and five to ten digital pictures (minimum 300dpi). The grant award letter will list the due date for the final report.
